EXCERPT: How to locate lift from what the clouds look like.

“Look for the best lift in clouds on their upwind portion, under their highest build-up and their darkest base areas. The darkness of a cumulus cloud is simply caused by the thickness of the cloud blocking the sun’s rays. This effect normally happens under the highest cloud build-up, so darker areas have the strongest thermal feed.
“It is common to encounter multiple thermal cores under a cloud – some may be better than others. A concave or bulged upward base is a sign of strong lift. When flying towards a cloud watch for swellings on the top and sides as indications that it is still growing. Once the growing stops the thermal feeding the cloud begins to die. Here is a summary of clues to good thermal producing clouds:

Look for

  • Large puffy clouds of a white fluffy hue
  • Growing clouds with swells or bulges
  • Sharp outlines and flat bases
  • Newly forming clouds

Aim for

  • The darkest and thickest looking clouds (except in thunderstorm conditions)
  • The darkest area of cloudbase.
  • A concave (upward dished) base area
  • The area with the highest cloud development
  • The upwind area of the cloud

  • Wispy clouds or areas of clouds
  • Diminishing clouds
  • Off-colour or “dirty” clouds
